Spring Cleaning for Your Mind: Letting Go of Mental Clutter

Just a few short weeks ago we sprung our clocks forward for Daylight Savings Time, signaling that Spring-time is right around the corner. For many of us, Spring signals a time to clean out and shed the excess from winter. Whether your “excess” is household clutter, organizing your wardrobe, or aiming to tighten up your exercise routine, we all generally have a little something we desire to leave behind as a memory of winter as we step into Spring-time. I’m here to propose a different kind of spring cleaning, where you clear out the mental clutter that’s been weighing you down. If you often feel mentally overwhelmed, chronically stressed out, or like you're never doing enough, you might be carrying more mental baggage than you realize. The good news? With the right approach, you can clear out that clutter, boost your mental wellbeing, and enhance your overall performance.

In this post, we’ll explore how to recognize when you’re mentally cluttered, why emotional decluttering is essential for your mental wellbeing, and practical steps you can take to clean up your mind. Plus, we’ll explore how performance coaching can help you achieve lasting change and help you live with greater clarity and calm.

How to Know if Mental Clutter is Getting the Best of You.

You’re caught up in the endless cycle of daily demands that compete for your time and attention - juggling multiple roles at once between work life, home life, and attempting to maintain a personal life. When you feel like you’re going one thousand miles a minute and there’s no time to slow down how do you know that mental clutter is getting the best of you? Here are a few tell-tale signs:

  • Constant Overwhelm: Your to-do list grows more than it shrinks. No matter how much you get done, it never feels like it’s enough.

  • Exhaustion or Burnout: You’re mentally drained, feeling like you’re running on empty. You lay awake at night ruminating.

  • Negative Self-Talk: You engage in perfectionistic thinking and self-judgement.  You might think, "I'm not doing enough," or "I’m failing."

  • Difficulty Focusing: Focusing on what’s in front of you feels like an impossible task. You jump from task to task completing busy work but never really making progress.

  • Emotional Reactivity: You’re easily activated or triggered when plans change or you encounter minor setbacks or challenges

If you recognize yourself in these signs, it’s a clear indication that your mind might need some emotional spring cleaning. Just like physical clutter can make your space feel chaotic, mental clutter can create a fog that affects everything from your career to your relationships and personal peace.

How Emotional Decluttering Improves Mental Wellbeing.

Clearing mental clutter doesn’t just make you feel more organized; it can also improve your overall mental wellbeing. When your mind is constantly cluttered with stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts, it becomes harder to think clearly and make decisions. This leads to burnout, frustration, and a sense of being stuck.

On the flip side, emotional decluttering helps you regain control over your thoughts and emotions. When you intentionally clear out unnecessary worries and negative beliefs, you create more space for positive thinking, productive action, and inner peace. This leads to:

  • Reduced Stress: When your mind isn’t racing a thousand miles a minute, you’re better poised to process stressors and challenges with resiliency and calm.

  • Improved Focus: Quitting the mental noise creates heightened concentration so you can focus more clearly on your goals and tasks, enhancing your performance.

  • Better Decision-Making: With a decluttered mind, you’ll find it easier to make decisions with confidence and to ensure your choices align with your core values.

  • Increased Confidence: When your mind is freed of self-criticism you’re able to engage with positive self-talk narratives that enhance your self-concept and confidence.

When your mind is clear, you’re better able to show up for yourself - personally and professionally. The result is a more balanced life, stronger relationships, and enhanced performance.

Practical Ways to Clean Out Mental Clutter.

Now that you understand why mental decluttering is essential for your wellbeing, you might be wondering “how in the world do I tidy-up my mental clutter?” Let's dive into some practical steps you can take to clear out the clutter and reset your mind.

1. Challenging Perfectionistic Narrative and Self-Criticism

If you find yourself thinking things like “I’m not productive enough” or “I am totally failing at this” then you’re engaging in patterns of negative self-talk that are very likely keeping you stuck.

To start clearing the clutter, become aware of your thoughts. Pay attention to when your mind starts to spiral into negativity.

One of my favorite books The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan highlights the phenomenon of our brains tendency to focus on the gap, aka, the things we don’t have, how things aren’t working out, and how we’re failing miserably. Dan challenges readers to disengage from the gap and instead engage with the gain - focusing on what you do have (skills, resources, etc), focusing on the actions that are working, or how your trial and error is guiding you to future successes. This mental reframe has the power to shift your brain out of spiraling in self-critique into engaging with constructive thought patterns that propel you forward.

2. Establish Boundaries to Prevent Mental Overload

Another way to clear mental clutter is by setting clear expectations and healthy boundaries. Saying “yes” without intention  - whether it’s agreeing to extra tasks at work, taking on more than you can handle in your personal life and beyond can cause mental clutter and overwhelm. The antidote to unintentional “yes’s” is to prioritize your time, energy, and your commitments - personally and professionally through communicating clear expectations and boundaries.

Setting boundaries is not about being selfish, but about preserving your mental wellbeing and ensuring you can show up as your best self.
