The power of non-negotiables.
I was recently watching an episode of the newest season of The Bear. In this episode, one of the lead characters, Chef Carmy, writes out his non-negotiables for the kitchen. When he presents the list to the other restaurant stakeholders they are vehemently opposed to the non-negotiables but Chef Carmy remains firm that the non-negotiables are just that…non-negotiable. These non-negotiables provide a standard, a routine, and a streamlined operating procedure that keeps Chef Carmy on track for his high-performance goal of a Michelin star. This episode reminded me of the importance of having a firm grip and grounding in your personal non-negotiables.
What are non-negotiables?
My definition of non-negotiables are behaviors or routines that promote holistic wellbeing, goal attainment, and keep priorities in check. Non-negotiables can exist in all areas of life, career, personal life, relationships, etc.
High-performers thrive on non-negotiables.
High-performers thrive on non-negotables because they provide a roadmap of what is essential to keep them on the path to success. In essence, non-negotiables are the standard operating procedures for high-performers. For example, if you want to set a goal of improving your overall health you might start by assessing what is already working in your health journey and then building from there. Perhaps your non-negotiables include getting 8 hours of sleep nightly, prioritizing hydration, daily exercise/movement, incorporating supplements, etc. Engaging with these non-negotiables work because the path to your desired outcomes are clear and defined. Future success is accessible when there’s a clear path to the goal.
Ready to make your impact?
You’re ready to make your impact but the path to your goal, dream, or vision seems unclear. If this is you, it’s time to create your list of non-negotiables, aka your operating procedures that take you from inaction to action. Take action, follow the path and assess and pivot as needed.
