5 Things that Impede your Goals
Do you have a goal? Something you’ve set your sights and energy on?
BUT…when you drop into working on that goal you feel stagnant, you’re frustrated that you’re not making progress, and you’re on the brink of giving up, or worse, maybe you’ve already given up.
So, let’s talk about five things that are keeping you stuck and holding you back from making progress on your goals.
1) Overthinking: I put this as the number one thing that holds you back because our thoughts drive our feelings, which then drive our actions. So if you’re caught up in garbage mind-drama you’re going to waste unnecessary time on the “what-ifs,” the “should I’s,” and the “why can’t I’s…” Overthinking only leads to a negative spiral of indecision, fear, panic, resistance, procrastination, and confusion. All of which keep you stuck.
2) Focusing on what you don’t have: when you focus on the lack you are experiencing, it triggers the negative thought, feeling, and action cycle yet again. If you’re thinking, “I don’t have enough clients” or “I can’t find a quality significant other” it creates feelings of scarcity, fear, and chaos. Which then triggers action that feels desperate and forced rather than strategic action that is aligned with what you already have and the results you’ve already achieved.
3) Lack of belief in yourself and your abilities: Big action requires big belief. If you’d don’t have the belief that you are capable and equipped to make your goals happen you’re in for an uphill battle. It’s nearly impossible to take action on something we don’t believe in fully.
4) Impatience: We live in a microwave society where we see people come into fame and fortune in what appears to be the blink of an eye. It creates an unfair comparison. We lament the fact that we haven’t found the same success as so-and-so on Instagram or didn’t climb the corporate ladder as fast as someone else. Completing a goal and doing it well, takes time. It takes hard work and dedication. It takes patience and persistence; not a microwave.
5) Taking meaningless action: I alluded to this in point number two. Many times we create busy work for ourselves in achieving our goals, we check our emails, we check our Instagram metrics, and so on, but the action is empty and meaningless in the context of our goal. It then serves as a self-fulfilling prophesy when we don’t achieve the goal, we can look back and say, ‘see, I tried so hard. I put in so much time and effort and it’s amounted to nothing.” Meaningless action is ultimately a barrier you’ve put in your own way.
What does all this mean for you and where do you go from here?
Awareness is the first step. Get honest with yourself and recognize which of these (or maybe all of these) areas are creating stagnation for you and the pursuit of your goals. After you’ve created awareness, strategy is key. How are you going to change your pattern of behaviors? What do you need to be thinking about yourself to achieve this goal? What beliefs do you need to be building to create success?
